The July Playlist

This month some guy claimed the album is dead. You know what I say to that guy? THESE: Bright Light Bright Light - Life is Easy First Aid Kit - Stay Gold La Roux - Trouble in ParadiseJenny Lewis - The Voyager

All brilliant, cohesive records; made by brilliant, creative people; none of which can be done proper justice chopped up across a million different playlists (sorry guys); and not one of them properly supported by Radio 1. Perhaps this could be part of the UK's ongoing sales problem - when it comes to our two biggest national stations, album artists are either shunted off towards Radio 2 or not played at all.

The digital era has undeniably had an impact on how I buy and consume music. I haven't forked out for a physical CD in years and the majority of my first listens now generally come via Google Music, tinnily through one headphone, sat at my desk at work. For the most part I'm content to shuffle my way from artist to artist - one Katy Perry track at a time is more than enough, let's be honest - but occasionally something will come along that makes me feel just as I did in 1999, two minutes into I Shall Be There ("I am going to buy that second B*Witched album and listen to every last one of its 39 minutes"). Bright Light Bright Light, First Aid Kit, La Roux, Jenny Lewis, Keavy Lynch - I salute you. Long live the album.

And so, at the risk of proving that guy's point, onto my playlist for July. This month comes inspired by my new purple Hounds of Love vinyl, a reignited love for CHVRCHES courtesy of BBC3's rolling T in the Park coverage, Kelis' incredible Somerset House gig I forgot to blog about, and this fascinating interview with one of my favourite pop producers on that most underrated of classics, Ashlee Simpson's debut.

There's something about summer, moreso than any other season, that makes me nostalgic for songs from years gone by - hence a healthy smattering of vintage Orbit-era All Saints, Dandy Warhols and Crowded House amid the (hopefully) tantalising offcuts from those four amazing albums I mentioned earlier. Enjoy!
